The month of March is Women's History Month. Certain month's we celebrate certain things but in the month of March we celebrate women. In February 1980, the first presidential proclamation declaring the week of march 8th as National Women's History Week, it was issued by president Jimmy Carter. The reason we celebrate Women's History Month is to remind ourselves of the accomplishments of women throughout the years to our culture and society.
Something's Women have done:
First women's rights convention meets in Seneca Falls, 1848
Wyoming territory is first to grant women the vote, 1869
Californian Julia Morgan is first woman admitted to Ecole de beaux- arts in Paris, 1898
Margaret Sanger opens first birth control clinic in United States, 1916
Edith Wharton is the first women to win a Pulitzer Prize, 1921
Activist Alice Paul proposes the equal rights amendment for the first time, 1923
Amelia Earhart is the first woman to cross the Atlantic in an airplane,1928
Frances Perkins becomes the first female member of presidential cabinet, 1933
The All American Girls Professional Baseball League becomes the first professional baseball league for female players,1943
Joan Benoit wins the first women's Olympic Marathon,1984
Once men started letting women have more freedom with what they can do, letting us do things that men also did we proved them wrong, we can accomplish as much as they can. I think it was a good idea to have a month to celebrate woman because we don't always get the recognition we deserve and having a full month all about woman shows that we're important, it was a big thing that happened to women in history.
A few more things that women did leading up to the 2010's:
Aretha Franklin becomes the first women elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, 1987
Manon Rheaume is the first women to play in an NHL game, 1992
Kathryn Bigelow becomes the first women to win an Oscar for the best director, 2010
