Sometimes, community service hits a little closer than the community; needs can often be quite personal. Such is the case with the recent service project of the Robert C. Byrd High School National Honor Society: Chemo Comfort Totes.
In conjunction with RCBHS Alumna Jessica Rose Johnson (’03), the group collected and donated over 100 items for the oncology patients at both United Hospital Center and Ruby Memorial Hospital, a service Johnson has provided for quite some time. She first began this very personal ministry in memory of her mother who passed from breast cancer several years ago. This time, the collections and donations will provide hope and fill another 72 totes for the chemotherapy patients.
Always on the lookout for worthy causes and service opportunities, “The reasons NHS jumped on board are many,” noted National Honor Society Sponsor Rhonda Reed. “I remember how much Jessica's mother, Diane, gave to the school when her daughter was a student. She was such a kind soul, always in support of Jessica as well as all children here. Additionally, this is close to my heart as both my parents passed from colon cancer. Just last year, Brandy, the mother of one of my students, was diagnosed with breast cancer. I wanted our organization to support something in honor and memory of those four.”
Needless to say, Mrs. Reed and the students graciously provided to help fulfill the need and continue the ministry initiated by Mrs. Johnson.
