Halloween's Craziest Myths

by Sarah G.

Halloween is widely considered the scariest time of year with witches, zombies, and ghosts to make the day spine-chilling. From running the costume-filled streets filling bags with candy to watching horror movies at home, this holiday is enjoyed by many.

Many myths and legends surround Halloween; here are just a few I would like to correct:

Myth #1: Razor blades in candy. This is just a myth your parents told you to sneakily get some the candy from your pile.

Myth #2: Halloween is the Devil's holiday. Tons of Americans believe that the holiday stems from Satan and demons, but Halloween is really the product of the 18th century folklore traditions of Scotland and Ireland. Actually, Halloween’s roots sprout from Catholic Traditions, and the name is acquired from “All Hallows Eve”, the night before All Saints Day and two nights before All Souls Day. The holiday is, in fact, not about the Devil or Satan.

Myth #3 A black cat is bad luck. Everyone growing up has heard that black cats are bad omens. Black cats are thought to be a witch's pet and protector against the forces of evil. This is just simply not true; a black cat is like any other cat you might see roaming the neighborhood or living in your own home. #Stopthehateonblackcats.

Halloween this year is on a Sunday, but if you would like to wear a Halloween costume to school on Friday October 30th, bring $1 to Ms. Jones in the library and participate in "Costumes for a Cause", in this case, breast-cancer awareness. About 200 dollars was raised and all proceeds will be donated You can also participate in distributing candy at the annual RCBHS “Trunk or Treat” at Jackson Square on Wednesday October 27th.
