Sometimes geometry is more than just math. Students in Doc. Nelson's class were given information about the pros of joining the National Guard by SSG Lynda L. Tulanowski and had the opportunity to build robots.
SSG Tulanowski spoke to students about what she and the Army National Guard offers. You can receive several benefits. One of the biggest is that they can pay up to 100% of your college tuition. They can also give up to $50,000 for student loan repayments. Other benefits include assistance for Life Insurance, Health Insurance, Dental Coverage, and several amounts of pay. Another thing is that if you go straight to college, you won't be deployed because they want you to focus on your schooling. Being in the military can also help in a company's hiring process. It may be easier to get a job with them knowing your strengths. SSG Tulanowski is also a counselor that helps people find jobs even if you aren't interested in deployment.
The robot building seemed to be a fun and exciting activity for the students, while they improved on several skills. Participants were placed in groups where they practiced their communication and team bonding skills. Both play a huge role in the military, especially in training camps. To build the robot, students were given one instructional book and a number of different materials. At times, it seemed challenging with having only one book to share with five people and with having little experience and knowledge of robot building. Aspen Linder, who was a participant said, "I thought it was good for us to hear all the opportunities they offer. I also enjoyed building the robots with my group even though it was challenging at some times."
