Nothing says spooky like a good scary movie. Here are 5 Halloween movies ranked from least scary to scariest.
1. Halloween (1978)
This movie stars Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie Strode and Nick Castle as Michael Myers. It is about a six-year-old boy who killed his sister on Halloween night. He is sent off to a mental institution and escapes 15 years later (the day before Halloween). He soon returns to his old home, notices a high school girl who is a babysitter and begins to stalk her. This movie is a classic. It personally didn't scare me as much as others, but it was an intense and enjoyable movie to watch.
2. Poltergeist (1982)
Staring Heather O'Rourke as Carol Anne Freeling, an average family in California is experiencing their little girl (Carol Anne) talking to a static TV. One early morning after the dad and the siblings leave for work and school, the mother and daughter notice the dining chairs oddly moving on their own. Eventually, the haunting becomes too much, and their youngest daughter comes up missing. Another classic movie! I will admit that I did jump a couple of times, but it was because one of the characters had a really creepy voice. It came out of nowhere!
3. The Shining (1980)
The Shining stars Jack Nicholson as Jack Torrance, Shelby Duvall as Wendy Torrance, and Danny Lloyd as Danny Torrance. The father (Jack) an author, gets a job as a caretaker at a hotel while it closes for the winter. He is hoping to cure his writer's block while he and his family are there. The son starts to get disturbing visions. Jack discovers the dark eerie secrets of the hotel which overtakes him, and he begins to terrorize his family. I love Stephen King, the writer of the novel on which this movie is based. His stories are always a fun Halloween scare. Even if you like to read, I'd still watch the movie version. It is very creepy, and I absolutely jumped a few times watching this.
4. Blair Witch Project (1999)
This movie stars Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard, and Michael Williams. MOTION SICKNESS WARNING! This film contains fast camera movement that may cause motion sickness.
Three film students go to a small town in Maryland to create a documentary about a legendary murderer called the Blair Witch. They interview local townspeople and gather information about the tale. Things get a little spooky when they get lost in the woods. I love this movie although it increases my fear of going outside in the dark all alone. I'm fine going into the woods in the day, but at night, no way! Definitely a good scare for me!
5. The Babadook (2014)
Staring Essie Davis as Amelia and Noah Wiseman as Samuel, a single mother struggling with depression from the sudden death of her husband is also faced with handling her son who is overly concerned that there is a monster in their house. The monster, familiar to him, is a character is one of his books. She comes to realize that it is much more than just his imagination. It is reality. The first time I watched this, my brother tortured me with this movie for the rest of the year. Yet, I had to watch it again and hated that it was the one that scared me the most. It's very creepy, and the subtle jump-scares place it at the top of the list for scariest movies.
Take a few hours, get some popcorn, and settle in. These movies are worth watching. I hope that this year's Halloween is enjoyable and scary!
