Robert C. Byrd's cheerleading team competed in the state championship last month, and won their sixth consecutive state title. Our school's cheerleaders hold the record for the most consecutive wins throughout the entire county for any sport, and aren't far from the state record.
This year's team consists of only thirteen girls. They were also a relatively young group, with just one senior. Eight members of the team are underclassmen and six of the eight had never competed at states.
Despite the continued pressure for the upperclassmen and the stress of being on the Civic Center floor for the first time for the underclassmen, the squad did what they needed to do.
The Flying Eagles prevailed through a tough season and came out on top. They dominated the state with the second place team almost 19 points behind. The Eagles earned a score of 337.35, Logan County received a 318.65, and Lewis County scored a 316.30.
This group of girls had all been working toward the same goal since July 31st, and their hard work paid off.
