Wild and Wonderful

West Virginia is a beautiful state, filled with various places for couples, families, and friends to sit back and enjoy or put on their hiking boots and explore. We hope to share a few of them with you in this first segment.

The first place that is a must to visit the Trans-Alleghany Lunatic Asylum in Weston, a mere 20 minutes away. Although tours of the historic landmark are given year-round, the haunted house is the featured attraction for which it is most known. Stop by in October, and you might even come across some classmates looking ghoulish.

The second place on the list is the Greenbrier Hotel located in White Sulphur Springs. The Greenbrier hosts historic bunkers previously used for the POTUS during troubled times. In recent years, it is home to golf tournaments and offers swimming, tennis, bowling and fine dining to its guests.

Another interesting place, The Palace of Gold, is located in Moundsville, Marshall County. The Palace of Gold overlooks the Appalachian Mountains, and represents an India like presence complete with a pond that highlights natural beauty through its landscape. This place is listed among the eight religious wanders in the United States. While in Moundsville, you might want to stop by the Grave Creek Mound Archaeological Complex, a Native American burial ground, and the West Virginia State Penitentiary. While rumored to be haunted, tours are given year-round.

Located in Jefferson County is the historic Harper’s Ferry. Harper’s Ferry consists of two small towns separated by Potomac and Shenandoah rivers. As history tells us, this area was very active during the Civil War and is the site of John Brown’s Raid. Nearby are two other historical places, St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church and Jefferson Rock. Harper’s Ferry is a great spot for history lovers, and features outdoor activities including hiking at national parks, zip lining, white water rafting, and ghost tours!

Another place to visit is Snowshoe Mountain in Pocahontas County. In the spring and summer months visitors can bike ride, paddleboard, golf, and canoe. Snowshoe also has a neat little village located in the heart of the resort.
