When you think of Robert C. Byrd High School, what comes to mind? The 5-time State Champion Cheerleaders? The award winning percussion ensemble? The competitive basketball team? The fabulous theatrical productions? How about the AP Scholars? The National Merit Finalists? The Math Field Day winners? So many things that we cannot be defined by a single group or event.
Each day in the classrooms and labs, activities that excite, instruct and enhance learning are taking place. From the Egg Drop experiment in physics class to computer-generated graphics in the Digital Imaging and Multimedia class, and everything in between, education is made fun and exciting.
Often, two worlds collide. This is often the case for the students in Terri Boggs’ AP English classes, as she aligns her activities closely with those of AP US History teacher Greg Phillips. Senior Madison Miles commented, “I liked how the two classes coincided. When we were studying segregation in history, we were using that information to complete projects in preparation for reading Huckleberry Finn in AP Language.” These cross-curricular lessons helped students see the whole picture. “When we were about to begin studying the Red Scare in APUSH,” remarked Senior Dylan McCullough, “that was also one of the topics to be discussed in context with ‘The Crucible’”. Knowledge students gained in one class helped complete the entire picture in another.
Cross-curricular collaboration is encouraged by our administration, and definitely beneficial to the students.
Great things are happening within these walls!
