Each year on February 14th, 150 million valentine day cards are exchanged annually… This makes valentine’s day the second most popular card exchanging holiday of the year. Valentine’s Day contains both Roman and Christian tradition. There are three saints that supposedly originated Valentine’s Day, one was a priest in Rome, a bishop in Terni, and a third person with the significant name St. Valentine. All three men were said to have been killed on Feb. 14 because of their religious beliefs.
The most notorious founder of Valentine’s Day is St. Valentine himself. St. Valentine held secret marriage ceremonies, he did not agree with Claudius’s beliefs. Marriage was prohibited by their ruler Claudius because he felt that marriage made the men weak. Unfortunately, Claudius eventually caught on too St. Valentine’s sneaky ways and placed him into the local jail, and then later executed him on February 14, 270 A.D. Ever since then February 14 is the day for couples to celebrate their love together. Couples present their love to each other by exchanging chocolate, cards, going to dinner, or maybe even attending a movie.
